How to paddleboard in + around Calgary this summer ☀️
This warm weather has us dreaming of paddleboarding season, Reader. Because this activity provides such a unique way to experience some of your favourite spots from a different perspective. Kelsey rented boards for years before she finally bought her own in 2021. She’s paddled here in the city at Bowness Park, in the mountains on Johnson Lake and Lower Kananaskis, and across BC in places like Cranbrook, Fernie and Kelowna. We even brought her board to the US on our roadtrip in 2023, so we could paddleboard together in Montana, Utah and Mexico. So maybe you’ve paddleboarded before too, and know just how fun and relaxing this activity can be. Or maybe you’re a newbie, and trying something new like this feels a bit intimidating (can I balance, will I fall off, is it hard??)… But here’s the thing: stepping outside of your comfort zone is where the real adventure begins. That’s why we connected with Kerry Lewis, founder of local Calgary business Paddle A Board. She too started out as a curious paddler with little experience, and is now a certified instructor leading lessons, programs and even retreats across Western Canada. Read about her powerful journey here. She knows exactly how it feels to be unsure, unsteady, and wondering if it’s even right for you — and now, she helps others build confidence on the water almost daily. So if you’ve ever thought I’d love to try that someday, this is your sign. Whether you're looking for a solo escape on calm waters, or a way to connect with other paddlers through movement and nature, paddleboarding might just be your next favourite activity. Plus, Kerry and her team offer lessons right here in the city so you don’t need to buy a thing — rentals are included, and her gentle, encouraging teaching style will have you feeling confident in no time.
