Your Complete Guide To The Inglewood Bird Sanctuary Right Now

Whether you've been to the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary before or not, it changes every time we visit.

Birds migrate, plants change with the seasons, and the on-site Nature Centre even hosts events and programs.

Despite being found smack dab in the middle of Calgary, this large wildlife reserve is home to hundreds of plants, animals and birds (we'll tell you just how many below).

So whether you're looking for a peaceful stroll, a quiet escape or a potential wildlife sighting, here's what you can expect when you head to the Sanctuary now:

Birds, Bridges & Boardwalks, Oh My!

During our 2 recent visits, we looped around this park's designated paths and found:

β€” a mix of dirt and paved trails running through the park and along the Bow River, which are fairly flat and easy. It's a great spot for families, strollers and anyone with limited mobility.

β€” chickadees, magpies, crows, ducks, geese, robins and even a woodpecker! So don't forget your binoculars β€” we hung out by the river, and saw lots of bird activity.

β€” and a beaver dam, with plenty of visible evidence on gnawed trees along the way.

Both times we visited (afternoon and dusk), we were practically the only ones there. This is the PERFECT spot for a peaceful stroll, to explore inner-city nature, or even to read a book (lots of secluded benches).

If you go around dawn or dusk, you may have a better chance of seeing wildlife, like beavers, deer and owls too!

Current Conditions

The pathways have melted a TON since Friday! Some were totally bare, others covered in icy snow, and some were full-on puddles. Definitely wear water-resistant shoes/boots with good grip.

What Makes The Sanctuary Unique

Even though the Sanctuary is not far from Highway 2 or downtown Calgary, over 270 species of birds, 21 species of mammals and 347 species of plants have been recorded here!

Spring is also migratory bird season, so you might see new birds flying home for the summer if you go soon.

There are monthly birdwatching courses you can attend if you want to learn more about our feathery friends!

You'll also find 3 structures at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary:

  1. Colonel James Walker House inside the park, shown above. You can't go inside, but you can walk around this iconic red brick building originally built in 1910.
  2. TD Outdoor Learning Centre is a wooden structure acting as an outdoor classroom for children to learn more about nature and the environment through programs.
  3. Plus the on-site Nature Centre, which has interpretive exhibits and info about the history, local wildlife and habitat. You can also use their bathrooms Wednesday-Sunday from 9:30am-4pm. Closed Mondays, Tuesdays & holidays.

If you visit outside of these hours, you can still access the park, and use the porta-potties in the parking lot.

Bonus Activity: Winged Wisdom Trail

We forgot to try this! But if you download this app, you can explore Indigenous art and teachings through an augmented reality featuring birds of Treaty 7 and wisdom of local Elders.

What NOT To Do At The Sanctuary...

  • Don't ride your bike inside β€” This is a wildlife habitat, so there's not fishing, biking, rollerblading, etc.
  • Don't bring your pet β€” For the same reason above, leave your pup at home (service dogs are allowed).
  • Don't wear sandals β€” unless you want your feet to get wet! The pathways were mucky yesterday, and Kelsey's sneakers didn't quite hold up.

Follow Our Route

If you're walking casually, you can loop around the Sanctuary in 30-45 minutes. Or stay longer as you wander 2.5-3kms of trails.

We'll be sharing our routes on Strava, a free activity tracking app! Create your account and request access here:

Getting Here

When you're ready to head out, find the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary east of downtown along the Bow River.

Park in the free lot at the Nature Centre, and enter through the building, or the gate on the south side if the Centre is closed.

If you want to walk or bike here, the Bow River pathway cuts nearby, connecting to Pearce Estate Park on the north or Sue Higgins off-leash park to the south (if you're looking for a lengthy adventure!).
